Boutique spa hotel, fantastic location - a real hidden jewel. Michael loves Petra Segreta's designer quality & spectacular spa.
Only about 2km from the charming village of San Pantaleo, yet seemingly a million miles from anywhere, and only 10 minutes' drive or so from the Costa Smeralda, Petra Segreta has stunning, panoramic views across the hills, to the coast. A hidden unspoilt slice of wonderful Sardinian countryside, it is impossible to find such a secluded and beautiful place, unless you actually stay there. No-one can just happen upon it. Let's make no bones about it - it is out of the way, off the beaten track, and all the more special for that.
Set in 5 hectares, paths lead through some of it, so that guests can enjoy a stroll through the natural countryside.Around the hotel, the grounds are absolutely unique and lush, with granite rock formations, huge boulders and beautiful landscaping, and the pretty pool sits on a sunny terrace. A state-of-the-art, heated hydro-massage swimming pool, it is surrounded by a large, furnished terrace - plenty of room to sit back and soak up the sun. Nearby, in a separate building, the spa is also amazing - Oriental massages, mud and beauty therapies, jacuzzi, "emotion " shower, sauna and gym. The spa manager is regarded as one of the four best therapists in the world. Guests have a real treat in store.
Hotel Petra Segreta is particularly attractive, taking the form of a traditional Sardinian hamlet, and it feels as if it has been there forever. The rooms and suites, which ooze quality and show impressive attention to detail, are nestled into the grounds and terraced into the hillsides. A path leads through the gardens, past the rooms on either side, to the top of the hill, where the main reception, restaurant, spa and pool are situated.
Petra Segreta's interior is very much a modern take on the traditional Sardinian theme, with an extensive and imaginative use of local materials. Soft earthy tones and shapely, tactile, organic forms blend with sumptuous sofas, comfortable chairs, and in winter, an open fire, all helping to create a kind of comfortable cocoon - the ideal place to while away a lazy afternoon or relax with a drink, after dinner. Lounges spill out onto fabulous terraces, from which the inescapable views are breathtaking and the sunsets are spectacular. You can see Cannigione, the island of Maddalena set in a pure azure sea, and even Corsica, in the distance.
The restaurant serves typically Italian and Sardinian dishes and Petra Segreta's excellent fresh and creative cuisine is fantastic. The one thing that is always on the menu, and will never change, is the wonderful view. In summer, the glass doors are opened up, and dinner is served outside, on the terrace, where clever lighting illuminates the surrounding rocks, providing a truly magical atmosphere.
Not only does Petra Segreta have that luxurious designer feel, with a wonderfully refined, but relaxed, atmosphere, but it also has real personality. The owners, Rosella and Luigi, have made the hotel their labour of love and it shows. Rosella is an architect and nowhere can she have ever used her skills to better effect. Luigi is the chef and he excercises his passion for food with total skill. Their presence is a discreet one, shy even, so it is Gianluca, their Manager, whom you will more frequently see and he is wonderful. He does his best to welcome his guests personally - he hardly ever seems to have a day off! He understands the meaning of hospitality and his charm pervades the whole place, extending to the members of his team, who are equally welcoming and helpful.
Just writing about Petra Segreta makes me want to go and live there! Paradise!
