You may think that as an island, the choices of travelling around Sicily and the Aeolian Islands is not as well connected as the main land.
However, you may be surprised that whether you are looking to travel to Taormina or to Cefalu, there is an option for you.
When it comes to travelling around Sicily, there are two different public transport options to choose from. Train or bus.
Sicily has direct connections with the major cities on the mainland by train. There are one or two different trains running the long distance routes every day.
The journey can be long, however, if you manage to book yourself a window seat you will have the perfect opportunity to take in plenty of the local scenery.
If you want to explore more of the train than the railways will allow then buses are the best option for you.
There are several bus companies throughout Sicily that offer both urban and rural services across the island.
They run regularly and allow you to take in some of the smaller villages and towns that Sicily has to offer.
The Catania Airport is serviced on the bus routes in Sicily, which means that you can easily get to the airport if you don’t have a car during your time on the islands.
However, another option is to book a transfer. This will need to be researched before you go.
There is no airport on the Aeolian Islands, and getting to your island of choice can be tricky.
You will need to look at the ferry service that is running closest to the airport that you are flying into and arrange to travel across the water on this ferry.
One of the simplest ways to explore the islands is to hire a car during your time there.
This will not only allow you to go at your own pace, but means that you can visit some of the more remote places too.
Best of all, if you find a place that you want to stop in and explore further, if you are driving yourself, you can do this.
Something that would be impossible if you were on a train.
