A large luxury villa, in private gardens, with a lovely pool, a stone’s throw from the sea and owned by a prince. What more could you want? Villa Sirena has it all!
Villa Sirena is perfect for a house party, for a large group of friends or family and, for such luxurious comfort in such an incredible spot, it is actually really good value, if you consider how little it calculates per person, even in high season.
The uniqueness of this location is not to be underestimated. A gatehouse marks the entrance into the Principe di Belmonte estate at Punta Licosa. Exclusive and private, very few villas have been allowed within its six kilometres, which has been owned by this noble family for over 400 years. 4km or so down the private driveway brings you to the sea and the beautiful Villa Sirena. A UNESCO protected nature reserve and part of the famous Cilento Marine Park, the area is an idyllic slice of uncontaminated nature.
Just a stone’s throw from the water’s edge, with its very own stretch of the Cilento marine reserve, Villa Sirena nestles amongst Mediterranean pines, alongside the ancient ruins of a Roman fort, a castello by the sea and the Belmonte family chapel. Offshore and close by lies the tiny island of Licosa, with its picturesque lighthouse. Named after one of the sirens, Leucosia, it is said that she threw herself into the sea and died, because Odysseus did not succumb to her fatal song, Homer’s Odyssey tells us how Odysseus tied himself to the mast and filled his crew’s ears with wax, to avoid the fate of so many other sailors, who had been lured onto the rocks, to their death, by the haunting melody of the sirens. So…don’t be tempted to swim out from Villa Sirena to see that singing mermaid….you might not come back!
Villa Sirena is an imposing, traditional stone house, a former hunting lodge, and, in times gone by, the Belmonte family guests used to visit to hunt wild boar, quail and other game, in the surrounding woods. Set in its own extensive grounds, there seems to be endless space, just for this glorious villa. Perfect for outdoor living, its fabulous terraces, with cushioned seating, rattan comfy chairs and dining areas, stretch along the back of the villa. Glimpses of the sea can be seen through pines and from the garden, which blossoms with perfumed jasmine, honeysuckle, bougainvillea and other shrubs. A separate, palm-covered gazebo in the garden provides a wonderful shaded “outdoor living room” – an idyllic place to relax and read a book or enjoy a glass of wine, or a cocktail or two. Just sink into the rattan sofas and chairs, take in the spectacular sea views and listen out for the melodic tune of a siren!
Back through the garden, into the little lane heading towards the sea, the charming pool sits in yet another garden, sheltered on one side by the remains of a Roman ruin, and on others by hedges. This corner of Villa Sirena is a dream. There is a changing room, shower and loo, and even a simple kitchen near the pool. Immediately beyond the pool, there is direct access to the sea. An elegant deck over a pebbly strip of beach, kitted out with sun-beds and umbrellas, overlooks the crystal clear Cilento Coast waters and the island of Licosa. Much of the year, there is also a type of “sandbag path”, which stretches out into the sea, into deeper water. Next to the pool room and a little further along the shore are the 16th century family chapel and the castello, as well as a tiny harbour, where guests can keep a motorboat or dinghy.
With so much going for Villa Sirena outside, it seems almost a shame to go inside. Nevertheless, inside is large, luxurious and elegant. The style is not modern designer chic, instead it is somehow more typical of a noble country house and feels like someone’s tasteful home, rather than a showpiece. Gracious comfort is the order of the day at Villa Sirena and the owner has plumped for stylish white soft furnishings, tasteful decorative pieces and wrought iron beds to set against the colourful Vietri tiles, the beamed ceilings and the wooden floors. Seven bedrooms, six bath/shower rooms and two large sitting rooms speak for themselves of the space and comfort that this villa provides. It is very special indeed.
From Villa Sirena, it is easy to visit many of the interesting Cilento sights. Paestum is about 30km, Acciaroli is about 16km and Santa Maria di Castellabate is only 12km. There, guests of Villa Sirena are welcome to use all of the facilities at Palazzo Belmonte, the four-star hotel also owned by the Prince. Pop out to Ogliastro Marina, the tiny resort just 4km down the road, for a quick pizza, a relaxing dinner or a morning coffee.
So…you will be spolit for choice. Go on sightseeing trips to discover the wonderful Cilento. Swim in crystal clear water. Enjoy stunning sunsets from the villa’s own sundeck, on its very own strip of private seaside heaven. Bask by the sheltered pool. Live more outside than in, relaxing on the extensive and elegant villa terraces, in the garden. The setting of Villa Sirena could hardly be more romantic and our guess is that you will not want to leave.
