Taormina is certainly one of Italy’s most famous and stylish resorts. The luxurious and glamorous Hotel Metropole is in the middle of it all. Step out of its doors into the narrow, mainly pedestrianised, main street, with classy shops, breathtaking views of Mount Etna and the sea, picture postcard piazzas, bars and restaurants. Stroll along to a wonderful Greco-Roman theatre, through the pretty, mediaeval centre. Sip Prosecco and watch the world go by.
From outside, there is just a tantalising glimpse of the fabulous interior of Hotel Metropole. Step inside, into a sophisticated and chic cocoon, with breathtakingly beautiful, unhindered views over the bay of Naxos. A celebration of antiquity with a flourish of modernity, ultra-modern design and contemporary style, sit side by side with typical, traditional Sicilian, period detail and classical elegance. This is a hotel to swoon over, a former Sicilian Belle Epoque palazzo brought bang up to date, with absolutely no loss of its sense of history and gracious style. It feels sumptuous and welcoming, a special place to be.
The bar is the cosy, sumptuously comfortable and welcoming heart of Hotel Metropole. It spills out onto a terrace, with uninterrupted views of the sea and the Bay of Naxos. Some Friday nights, it hosts a Jazz Night, low-key, trendy music and a place for “beautiful people” to meet – it all feels very hip, but not remotely pretentious. The romantic gourmet restaurant has the same spectacular views and boasts a high reputation. Innovative haute cuisine and fine dining, with a magical view to enjoy, is far too tempting to resist.
The rooms are as you might expect from a boutique hotel like The Metropole. Aiming at luxury, the designer’s attention to detail is obvious. Maybe less restrained by historic authenticity, he has clearly had fun with the rooms. Each one is different, often extravagant and eccentric. Expect to see bathrooms to die for, Romanesque artwork, huge and ornate Baroque mirrors, white leather sofas, extravagant chandeliers, padded white leather headboards or round beds.
The small, perfectly formed infinity pool floats between sea and sky, and is truly spectacular. The spa is a dream. If you’re not staying at the Hotel Metropole, you’ll wander past and wish that you were! On Taormina’s narrow main street, this is THE place to be.
