La Maiella are family-friendly apartments in Loreto Aprutino in Abruzzo. This hidden bolthole offers stunning views, a pool, simple apartments and the best food ever. A real agriturismo.
Down a long driveway, La Maiella seems like a hidden corner of Abruzzo, tucked away amongst rolling countryside and with beautiful views, over the wooded hillside, towards the high Maiella Mountains and the Grand Sasso. The sea is only about half an hour away from La Maiella making it the perfect spot for families.
La Maiella’s sunny yellow farmhouse is quite gracious, standing amongst well-tended lawns and a natural landscape. Accommodation is in the main house of La Maiella, in chalet-style buildings, either in the grounds or in converted farm buildings. They are simple and unsophisticated, but tasteful – perfectly suited to its rustic country environment. There is a lounge area where you can play games, watch tv or catch up on a good book and a brick-vaulted dining room. The swimming pool, on a sunny terrace, is absolutely beautiful and really makes the most of this stunning location.
The owner loves Abruzzo with a passion and happily helps guests plan their trips and days out beyond Citta Sant’Angelo. At La Maiella, you are not just guests, but friends, who receive the very best of welcomes, often dining with the owner and family, sampling the genuine and time-honoured recipes of the regions of Abruzzo, with some secrets thrown in. The 26-hectare farm of La Maiella, with 11 hectares of woods, grows kiwi, cereals, olives and grapes. La Maiella rears chickens, ducks, turkeys and rabbits. Food and wine are mostly organically produced, and they will happily cater for vegetarian and gluten-free diets (in fact, they have a few secrets up their sleeve if you wish to avoid gluten, but love pasta and pizza!).
Halfway (approx 7km) between Loreto Aprutino, and Penne, the traditional agritourist farm of La Maiella is not far from civilisation, yet feels a world away. A rural setting such as this is difficult to beat. If you love natural surroundings, fantastic food, really great wine and supreme hospitality, a holiday at La Maiella is always a treat for both couples and families.
