La Scuderia is a self-catering villa in Racale, Puglia and is perfectly suited for families. Not far from Gallipoli with sandy beaches, La Scuderia is a peach of a place, with only six villas and a stunning pool, perfect for a relaxing family holiday.
Once a country estate and stud farm, breeding pedigree horses, La Scuderia has been lovingly restored to provide charming self-catering accommodation in six villa-type apartments. The rural location is ideal, with a small typical Salento town within a couple of kilometres and Gallipoli and its long stretches of sandy beaches less than 10km away. The small resort of Torre Suda, with its rocky shoreline, is less than 4km, with quite easy access off the rocks into the sea.
When you arrive, you are first struck by La Scuderia’s attractive natural looking gardens. Planting is profuse, but looks effortless and completely at one with this rustic, peaceful spot. In fact, it is so lovely that it has often been used as the set for rather glamorous fashion photo shoots. The stunning pool at is sculpted into the landscaping and forms the relaxing focal point of La Scuderia. It curves its way between secular olive trees, lush Mediterranean plants, native shrubs and sturdy dry stone walls. It is especially impressive at night, beautifully lit and romantic, a perfect spot for an evening rendezvous under the stars. There is ample sunbathing room around the pool, as well as elegant gazebo for shade.
The accommodation at La Scuderia is a mix of villa, apartment and villetta. With real skill and a feel for the traditional vernacular architecture, La Scuderia has been transformed into a small hamlet of stuccoed pajare-type buildings. The pajare are the typical stone houses of the Salento – the Salento’s trulli, if you like just without a cone but with equally thick dry stone walls and sloping outside walls. The result at La Scuderia is a series of pathways, which take you through the “hamlet” to the more modern version of pajare, which make up the accommodation.
Every pajara-villa at La Scuderia seems to have a window on nature, through glazed doors or windows, which look out onto the garden. La Scuderia’s atmosphere is relaxed and laid-back. It’s great!
