With Summer here, the thoughts of the Long Travel team have turned to our favourite places to visit for a break away in the glorious Italian sunshine. Here is our Commercial Operations Manager, Michael to share with you his love for the stunning island of Sardinia…
Michael's visit to Sardinia…
"I have visited Sardinia twice now, and each time been amazed by the island’s stunning coastline, white sandy beaches, history and fabulous cuisine.
On my last trip, I visited the charming seaside town Alghero in the north west of the island. The beautiful old town of Alghero is steeped in Catalan-Italian history with winding streets, filled with an array of cafes, bars and restaurants. Where you can sample the tasty local cuisine such as fresh Paella, Seadas, a cheese filled pastry dessert doused in honey, and Pane Carasau (music paper), a very thin and crispy bread, whilst you relax and soak up the atmosphere.
From Alghero harbour it is worth taking a boat trip to Grotta di Nettuno (Neptune’s Grotto) to marvel at the cave’s magical stalactite ceilings and underground Salt Lake. Or to spend a day at one of the stunning white sandy beaches, although the most popular beach has to be La Pelosa beach, Stintino, which is renowned as one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe!
A couple of hours drive south east of Alghero are the Supramonte mountains, home to incredible scenery, traditional towns, the Tiscali archaeological site and Su Gologone – one of my favourite hotels and home to one of the best restaurants I have ever experienced. The Su Gologone hotel serves amazing traditional Sardinian cuisine such as Porceddu (roast suckling pig), Panadas (oven baked pies,) or the famous mini pasta balls, Loreghittas – all best enjoyed with a glass of delicious local vino!
Sardinia has so much to explore and is a must for those seeking the perfect Italian island getaway.”
