Here at Long Travel, we have been thinking about our favourite regions of Italy for a relaxing break away from the pressures of everyday life. One of our favourite places to unwind and watch the world go by, must be without a doubt the beautiful region of Puglia. Known as the 'heel of Italy’s boot', Puglia boasts golden beaches, delicious local cuisine, quirky villages and plenty of warm Mediterranean sunshine – a haven for those that seek quintessential Italian experiences.
Nadia's top five must-see sights in Puglia...
“One of my favourite places for a relaxing holiday in the glorious Italian sunshine has to be Puglia. I absolutely love the region's stunning scenery, glorious beaches and scrumptious cuisine – Puglia really does have so much to offer! Here are my top five must-see sights…
1) Lecce - the ‘Florence of the South’, known for its beautiful Baroque façades, elegant palazzi and wonderful churches. The architecture is simply breathtaking and there is an array of lovely piazzas, boutiques and Pugliese restaurants for you to explore.
2) Alberobello - for a ‘trulli’ authentic Pugliese experience, I recommend a visit to Alberobello, a UNESCO-listed town in the picturesque Valle d’Itria. Known as the capital of the world-famous Trulli, white-washed conical-roofed houses that have become synonymous with Puglia.
3) Polignano a Mare - is perched high above the crystal waters of the Adriatic Sea. This enchanting town is home to cliff diving and winding streets, filled with quaint bars serving some of Italy’s finest gelato – a must on a warm summer’s day!
4) Cisternino – a charming old town with a fabulous local market, where you will find delicious, fresh local produce. I recommend buying some Tarallini, a traditional savoury snack made from extra virgin olive oil and local white wine – a very moreish nibble to enjoy with a pre-dinner glass of Salice Salentino.
5) Locorotondo – a picturesque white-washed town, situated in the scenic Valle d’Itria. This quaint little town offers an array of small shops selling traditional Pugliese pottery and has fantastic views across the region’s vineyards, which naturally means the local wine is just simply delicious!
If you are feeling inspired, then there is no better way to explore these must-see sights than on one of our 7-night or 14-night hand-picked collections across Puglia. Please visit our website to find out more.”
